William Barbee Line

William Barbee of Essex and Middlesex Counties, Virginia (1660 - 1720). Descendants moved to the Wake, Chatham, Orange Counties area of North Carolina . From North Carolina many branches went to Tennessee and a few branches went to Kentucky, Georgia and Texas. For extensive information on this line look for "A Study of the Barbee Families of Chatham, Orange and Wake Counties in North Carolina" by Ruth Herndon Shields, Belle Lewter West and Kathryn Crossley Stone, 1971 in many genealogical libraries. There is a thick supplement also. Gregory Barbee is in the process of preparing a further update of this great work and it is available on line! Please help Gregory by sending him corrections.

Historic Places

Barbee's Mountain and family cemetery is located on the University of North Carolina campus. Christopher "Old Kit" Barbee was the major donor of land for the University.

Barbee Surname DNA Project

The goal is to supplement traditional genealogy research and help find family connections and origins. Goals are to determine whether William is related to Andrew Barbee (the other early U.S. Barbee line), whether U.S. Barbee's are related to Barbee's in other countries and whether other Barbee lines in the U.S. connect to William Barbee.
