Will of Ann Miller Barbee (1693 - 1766) of Essex County, Virginia:

The will of Ann Barbee was recorded in Essex Co., Virginia, Will Book 12, page 252. August 17, 1761 Ann made her will:

"In the name of God Amen, I, Ann Barbee of Essex County, being in perfect health sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament, first I pray to God thro my blessed Savior Jesus Christ to receive my soul unto His Most Holy Protection. My wordly estate I dispose of as follows: Item - I give to my daughter Rose Sears one negro girl named Milley. Item - I give to my daughter Mary Sears one negro girl named Lydia. Item - I do order that all my lands be sold by my executors to the highest bidder for money and the money arising from the sale of my lands aforesaid all my negroes not before given and Personal Estate to be laid off and divided into eight equal parts to be applied as is herein after directed. Item - I give and bequeath to my children Christopher, John, Joseph and Francis Barbee, Mary and Rose Sears, Mical Pitts each one eighth of my Estate aforesaid. Item - I give to my grandsons Christopher Barbee and Thomas Redd one-eighth part of my Estate aforesaid to be equally divided between my two said grandsons. Lastly, I do appoint my son Francis Barbee, my son-in-law Henry Sears and my friend John Lee Junr. executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this seventh day of August 1761. Signed Ann Barbee Witnesses Samuel Hawes John Samuel Wm. Webb"

Francis Barbee was appointed executor, October 20, 1766, and the following division of the Estate was made. To John Barbee 2 negroes and 1/8 of the estate To Henry Sears and his wife Rose Sears 2 negroes and 1/8 of the estate To Francis Barbee 1 negro and 1/8 of the estate To Thomas Redd 1/16 of the estate To John Pitts and his wife Micall 1 negro and 1/8 of the estate To Joseph Barbee 2 negroes and 1/8 of the estate To Mary Barbee Sears 2 negroes and 1/8 of the estate To Christopher Barbee Sr. 2 negroes and 1/8 of the estate To Christopher Barbee Jr. 1/16 of the estate This settlement was found in Essex Co., Book 10 pages 297-298.
